Who needs steroids when you got McDonalds

February 21st, 2010

At this year’s Olympic games, we have seen some amazing performances.

  • Petra Majdic winning a bronze medal in cross country skiing after suffering 5 cracked ribs and a deflated lung.
  • Lindsey Vonn winning downhill gold with her messed up shins
  • Shaun White twisting and turning like the Tazmanian Devil
  • Jon Montgomery coming from behind to win gold in my new favorite winter sport – skeleton

And, in past years, we might have attributed those performances to steroids…but not with these Olympians.

They don’t need steroids.

They’re being powered by the official food & drink of the 2010 Olympics…

McDonalds and Coca-Cola

But wait, it gets better.

McDonalds has decided to sponsor hundreds of young athletes as they train & eat their way to future Olympic glory.

Allow me to introduce you to the 2026 Olympic gold medal winner in downhill skiing and competitive eating.

Michael Phelps: Greatest Olympic Eater of All Time

August 15th, 2008
Yeahhhhh!!!!.....The pizza guy is here!!!

Yeahhhhh!!!!.....The pizza guy is here!!!

According to this New York Post article, Michael Phelps isn’t just the most decorated Olympic champion of all time, he may also be one of the world’s greatest eaters.

“Eat, sleep and swim. That’s all I can do,” Phelps told NBC when asked what he needs to win medals. “Get some calories into my system and try to recover the best I can.”

SOME CALORIES….obviously Mr. Phelps is a master of the understatement.

According to the Post, the following is a visual representation of EXACTLY the type and amount of food that Michael Phelps eats on a daily basis.

Breakfast:

Three fried-egg sandwiches loaded with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, fried onions and mayonnaise.

baconeggmcmuffin

Two cups of coffee.

One five-egg omelet.

One bowl of grits.

Three slices of French toast topped with powdered sugar.

french-toast

Three chocolate-chip pancakes

Breakfast’s finished…time for a nap.

Lunch:

One pound of enriched pasta.

Two large ham and cheese sandwiches with mayo on white bread.

Energy drinks packing 1,000 calories.

Exactly how long does he have to wait to get back into the pool after eating this meal?

Dinner:

One pound of pasta.

An entire pizza.

More energy drinks.

Well that’s it:

12,000 Calories…divided over 3 gigantic meals.

And he looks like this…

hey, watch where you put that hand! I'm an Olympic champion dammit!!!

Rubbing the Buddha's belly for good luck

What would happen if a normal person tried to eat 12,000 calories a day.

Well, why don’t we ask Jared?

You know, Jared. Jared Fogle?…The Subway Diet guy.

Right. That Jared.

Well, according to Jared, back before he invented the submarine sandwich, he was a pretty big guy.

How big.

435 pounds big.

And how did he get this big?

By eating 10,000 calories a day.

Not 12,000 like Michael Phelps but close.

The Jared Fogle See-Food Diet

So what did Jared’s pre-Subway diet look like?

“Every day for breakfast, he’d have two bacon, egg and cheese sandwiches, with a large order of hash browns, a large coffee with cream and 10 packets of sugar”.

“Lunch was an entire pizza — extra meat, extra cheese, and of course dessert”.

“For a mid-afternoon snack, he would usually have two large bean burritos with extra cheese”.

“And for dinner? That usually consisted of not one or two, but three trips to the Chinese buffet, and ice cream for dessert”.

And we’re not finished yet. He usually topped off each day with a late-night snack – not a warm glass of milk, but a hamburger, French fries and some kind of dessert”.

urp…I feel sick….and confused.

How can two men eat the same amount of food and one becomes an Olympic swimming god while the other becomes obese and depressed?

Well, I think it may have something to do with the fact that one of them trains for six hours a day, six days a week, without fail. His workouts consist of swimming 50 miles a week along with hitting the weight room.

I will let you decide who I am talking about.

Transformation Inspiration

August 8th, 2008
41 yr. old Mom, Olympian and Transformation Inspiration Dara Torres

41 yr. old Mom, Olympian and Transformation Inspiration Dara Torres

Bear with me for a minute, because what I am going to say next will seem, at first,  to have nothing to do with supermodel, Super Mom and Olympian, Dara Torres.

A friend of mine called me up on the weekend and asked me if I would help him get ‘back into shape’.

Surprised?

You bet. This guy never asks for advice. He is (or at least was) the guy that everyone in the gym went to for help with their strength, speed, body-fat, etc…

So, yeah I was surprised.

I was even more surprised when he said that Dara Torres was his inspiration for getting back into shape.

You may also be surprised after I tell you a little bit about him:

Age: Late 30s

Height and Weight: 5′11″ …weight?…hmmmm….I have seen him at 220 lbs lean and 299 1/2 lbs loaded with muscle and fat. According to him, he is around 270-275 right now, and in poor shape due to injuries and an unquenchable desire for all things CARB.

Athletic Background: Former football player and current strength athlete. Built for power. At 260 lbs, he was laser timed at 4.69 in the 40 yard dash. Basically, this guy is, or rather was, one big chunk of quick-twitch muscle fibers.

Current Goals: Drop weight, get healthy, correct any muscle imbalances, improve his strength to weight ratio and look good in a swimsuit. Not like Dara Torres, but good in his own manly kind of way.

His Inspiration / Motivation / Raison D’Exercise: Dara Torres

Dara Grace Torres (born April 15, 1967) is an American swimmer. She will be the first swimmer from the United States to compete in five Olympics: 1984, 1988, 1992, 2000, and 2008. She will compete in the Beijing Olympic Games in the 50 meter freestyle, 4 x 100 medley relay, and 4 x 100 freestyle relay.

She has won eight Olympic medals, including four golds, and won five medals alone in Sydney in 2000, the Games in which she was the eldest member on the team with her 33 years.

On August 1st, 2007 at the age of 40 (just 15 months after giving birth to her first child), she won gold in the 100 meter freestyle at the U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis, her 14th win at these events.

She then followed that up on August 4th by twice breaking her own American record in the 50 m freestyle, 26 years after she first set the American record at just 15 years old.

So What’s Your Transformation Inspiration?

Can I make a suggestion?

Watch the Olympics!!!

Watch the Olympians.

Listen to their stories:

Years and years of brutal, painful training.

Eating to fuel the body, not to satisfy their sweet-tooth.

Sacrifice and discipline in pursuit of a beautiful goal.

My guy isn’t dreaming of making the Olympics.

His goals are a bit more pedestrian. But, he knows that if Dara Torres, at 41 years of age can set national records and compete in the Olympics, then he CAN transform his body.

And if you need some more inspiration, take a look at the following pictures of British Olympians, swimmer Gregor Tait, triple jumper Phillips Idowu and cyclist Rebecca Romero.

Even if you could care less about the Olympics, I guarantee that you can admire the physical results of the hard work that these athletes put their bodies through.

Works of art sculpted out of flesh and bone.

In the next few posts, I will be outlining my plan for transforming my chunky buddy’s pudgy body into a mass of twisted steel and sex appeal
