Jeff Garlin – my footprint

March 10th, 2010

Jeff Garlin’s new book (my footprint) is the best & worst diet book I have ever read.

The worst because…. it’s not really a diet book.

There’s none of the eat this and don’t eat this that all diet books are supposed to have.

There are no promises of rapid and permanent weight loss.

There are no recipes.

The cover doesn’t feature an image of a person with taut muscles and a rippling six pack.

It features Jeff…and his still too big belly…walking on a treadmill….in the middle of a forest.

Not exactly the prototypical diet industry role model.

But that’s okay.

It’s okay because Jeff has written a book that should be read by:

  1. People who find themselves unable to stop themselves from eating
  2. People who identify themselves as food addicts
  3. People who have to eat when they feel angry, sad, anxious, happy, etc..
  4. People who eat when they are already full
  5. People who eat to the point of nausea
  6. People who eat past the point of nausea
  7. People who hide their eating habits from others
  8. People who are ashamed of how they eat
  9. People who love and care for people who eat like Jeff Garlin

Now onto the book…

Jeff Garlin provided the voice for the overweight spaceship captain in the movie WALL-E.

If you haven’t seen the movie, you really should. Even if you don’t like animation – but, I digress.

Back to the book.

After attending the closing night of WALL-E at a movie theater in Hollywood, Jeff realized (not for the first time), that for years, he has been telling himself that he’s going to finally lose the weight and get in shape. But he never does.

On that fateful night, after watching the captain experience his own epiphany, Jeff realizes that it’s finally time for him to stop talking about losing weight and to finally do something about it.

“If not now, then when”?

And as his lies in bed that night, Jeff is struck by an idea – he’ll write about his attempt to lose weight.

And just like his character in WALL-E, he decides to add an environmental transformation to his physical one.

Jeff has decided to lower his carbon footprint as he simultaneously lowers his personal footprint.

Jeff’s Weight Loss Journey

The first thing you’re going to notice about this book is that it reads like a series of diary entries. Chronologically we read about Jeff’s day to day struggles to overcome his food addiction and drop a ton of weight (while simultaneously lightening his environmental impact upon the earth).

The second thing that you’re going to notice is that Jeff is funny. Seriously funny. For those people who are already fans of Curb Your Enthusiasm, this will come as no surprise. But for those people who have never watched Curb, let’s just say that as I read this book (in public – coffee shop, chiropractor’s office) I couldn’t stop myself from laughing out loud.

Yes – I was that strange person laughing to himself in a room full of people.

What I Loved About Jeff’s Message

Jeff made two points that struck me as terribly important.

1.     He is a food addict.

This is a very controversial statement.

Most weight loss experts (and the general) population that weight loss is as simple as eating less & moving more.

They are wrong.

People like Jeff know that in addition to the chemistry and biology of human metabolism, many of us have to deal with powerful mental & emotional obstacles that drive us to eat and eat and eat.

Just like the alcoholic, compulsive gambler or drug addict, our thoughts and emotions can have a profound effect upon our hormones, brain chemistry and ultimately our actions.

Food addiction is real.

2.     Weight Loss is hard work.

Unlike other “food addicts” Jeff doesn’t take the position that his addiction makes it impossible to lose weight. He doesn’t assume the role of victim.

Jeff is eager to spread the message that:

  • Weight loss is possible
  • But it is going to be really hard

There are no magic solutions.

There are going to be good days and there are going to be bad days.

Weight loss is hard work.

End of story.

Snake Oil Supplements v.s. Instant Gratification

February 22nd, 2010

How can I lose weight fast?

sigh….you would not believe how often I hear this question.

Sure, it may have taken 10 years to put on all of that extra body-fat, but everyone wants to melt it off in a couple of months.

And that’s why people watch The Biggest Loser (it’s NBC’s highest rated show).

And that’s why people buy Fat Burners.

Because they promise results….very fast, very effective results

But what happens when ordinary folk don’t get the advertised results?

They get mad…and when people get mad in 2010….they sue.

According to the NY Daily Times, “Biggest Loser” celeb trainer Jillian Michaels is being sued over one of her weight-loss supplements.

Kathy Hensley charges that the supplements are made with a “potentially lethal” ingredient, citrus aurantium, which can in rare cases cause heart problems and high blood pressure, according to Us Weekly.

Hensley, who’s suing for less than $5,000, also names the supplements’ maker Thin Care, Basic Research and Walgreens.

Michaels, 36, who calls herself “America’s Toughest Trainer,” told Us Weekly in a statement after the first lawsuit was filed that the claims against her supplements are “entirely without merit.”

.

Besides citrus aurantium, the pills contain guarana and coffee bean extract.

.

“I stand behind all my products,” Michaels’ statement said.

.

ThinCare also responded by saying: “We are confident we will prevail.”

ThinCare is wrong.

No one is going to prevail here.

  • Not Jillian Michaels
  • Not ThinCare
  • Not The Biggest Loser
  • Not the fans of The Biggest Loser
  • and not Kathy Hensley

Everyone involved with this mess is a loser.

The Solution….Grow the Hell Up People

You didn’t put the weight on overnight and you’re not going to take it off overnight.

The truth about fat burners is that:

  • Most of them don’t work
  • And the ones that do work only work for a short period of time

So, save your money, read through the Health Habits archives, join the Facebook Group, sign up for online training (shameless plug), toss out the chocolate covered bacon strips and get ready to sweat.

Online Personal Training

February 16th, 2010

A little over a month ago, I introduced my Health Habits online personal training service….

…and I can’t believe how successful it’s been.

.

Each new client has achieved noticeable results (weight loss, strength gains, improved endurance, lower heart rate and blood pressure) after just a few weeks.

I couldn’t be happier….or more relieved.

Because, if I am being completely honest, I have to admit that I was a little bit worried about doing online training.

I was worried that because my online clients wouldn’t be getting the same “hands on” type of attention that my face to face clients get, they might not get the same quality of results.

And, my (slightly overinflated) ego wouldn’t be happy with half-assed training results. I built my training business solely on word of mouth and a mild case of OCD when it comes to designing and implementing training programs.

.

Now I am kicking myself for not doing this sooner.

.

So, as a thank you to all of the people who already signed up, and because I am unbelievably happy about how things have gone so far, for the remainder of the month, I am offering 3 months of online training for the price of 2 months.

Unfortunately, because I design all of the training programs by hand, I can only take on another 8 clients…sorry.

3 Months of Online Personal Training – $500….Save $250

The Secret of Senior Fitness

January 26th, 2010

The diet/weight loss industry is a multi-billion dollar business.

So is the healthcare industry…

and the pharmaceutical industry…

and the health insurance biz.

Billions and billions and billions and billions.

In contrast, the amount of money being spent on health promotion and disease prevention last year in the United States was $11.78.

But, that’s okay.

Because, according to a group of studies published this week in the Archives of Internal Medicine, researchers have identified a low cost solution that “not only helps maintain good health, but may even prevent the onset of chronic diseases, such as heart disease, osteoarthritis and dementia”.

And considering that the Baby Boomers have begun to enter their senior years, senior citizen health & fitness is about to become a major social & economic driver in the coming years.

So, we have to decide:

  • Do we want to spend billions & billions attempting to treat the symptoms of heart disease, dementia, osteoporosis, diabetes, cancer, alzheimers….?
  • Or do we want to spend $11.78 and prevent these diseases from happening in the first place?

.

The Secret of Senior Fitness

So what is this low-cost secret to senior fitness?

According to these studies presented in this month’s Archives of Internal Medicine, it’s EXERCISE

  • Study # 1 showed that seniors with higher levels of midlife physical activity experienced exceptional health status among women who survive to older ages (70+) and reinforce the conclusion that physical activity improves overall health as we age.
  • A second study looked at the effectiveness of targeted exercise programs on the health-related quality of life of institutionalized senior citizens. Amongst this demographic, exercise produced an improvement in the overall quality of daily activities – walking, continence, nutrition and mental cognition.
  • A third study showed that 1 to 2 resistance training workouts per week produced significant improvements in the cognitive functions of 65 to 75 year old women.
  • A fourth study showed that a exercise program focusing on intensity helped women (65+) improve their bone mineral density, fall rate and cardio heart disease risk factors…with no increase in direct costs.
  • The fifth study showed that people 55+ are much less likely to experience cognitive impairment (dementia, alzheimers) as they glide into their senior years.

These studies back up previous research showing that:

  • High blood sugar levels significantly increase your risk of cognitive impairment (link)
  • Overweight/Obese seniors (60 – 75) were able to increase their physical fitness, increase their muscle mass and lose body-fat…all in 4 months. (link)
  • Daily physical activity is able to counteract  fat genes (FTO) (link)

.

So, what are you supposed to do with all this info?

  1. Stay active
  2. Encourage your friends & family to be active. Healthcare costs associated with inactivity & poor diet and lifestyle choices are going to skyrocket as the bulk of the baby boomer population enters their senior years. Everybody ready for another economic meltdown?
  3. Encourage your employer / government to get proactive about rising healthcare costs by spending a little more on health promotion / disease prevention. Public health & fitness facilities and programs need to become a priority.

And, to do my part, I will post an article tomorrow about the type of fitness program seniors should be doing.

What you DON’T want in a personal trainer

January 12th, 2010

Here’s a little story for anyone out there thinking of hiring a personal trainer….

Earlier today, I was meeting with a potential new client.

For the last six months, she had been working out on her own and was less than pleased with the results. Previous to that, she had worked with a personal trainer for four months.

She was even less pleased with that experience.

Here’s why:

  • Over the four months, she spent $4800 ($100 per session x 3 sessions per week x 16 weeks)
  • Her weight yo-yo’d during this experience – eventually settling at 11 lbs lost
  • Her initial goal was 40 lbs

When her initial personal training package expired (48 sessions), she was asked to renew for another 48 sessions at the same rate.

At this time, she expressed her concerns about her lack of progress. She thought she should have lost more weight and was hesitant to renew based upon her results after 16 weeks.

This is what her trainer said:

  • He was also disappointed with her results
  • He was surprised that she didn’t do better, because all of his clients that follow his program achieve their goals.
  • The clients that don’t achieve their goals are unsuccessful because they don’t follow his program.
  • They cheat on their diet or they don’t do their self-directed cardio sessions.

and here’s my favorite…

  • He’s only with her 3 hours per week. That leaves 165 hours (24 x 7 – 3) in the week for her to sabotage his plan.
  • His responsibility is to design & deliver the program.
  • Her responsibility is to follow his direction.

And, you know what, he’s right.

He can’t follow her around and make sure she doesn’t follow the prescribed diet or do her “self-directed” cardio sessions.

But, for $4800, doesn’t she deserve more than a training program and 48 hours of counting reps and stretching her hamstrings?

(BTW, I saw the program, and I was unimpressed to say the least)

This is what she should have got for $4800

  • They should have spent time during every session discussion discussing what happened to her in between sessions.
  • He should have known if she was having trouble sticking to the plan
  • They should have discussed motivational techniques
  • He should have asked questions to find her triggers for poor eating.
  • He should have taught her how to look inside herself and identify the thoughts and emotions attached to her poor eating habits
  • He should have known she wasn’t doing as well as she should have
  • He should have worked harder to find the buttons that needed pushing
  • For $4800, he should have mustered up some personal & professional pride and made change happen.

.

But enough about her ex-trainer douche-bag. Here’s what happened during our meeting

.

After some initial pleasantries, we go down to the question & answer period of our meeting. I asked her all of the questions that I typically ask potential clients.

And after 30 minutes or so, I was pretty sure that her eating problems are tied up in her emotions.

We talked about her life. We talked about her eating patterns. We talked about some of the tricks I have picked up through the years. I watched her get agitated while talking about certain topics. I watched her body relax and her mood lift when she talked about her kids. When we talked about her friend’s weight loss success (a former client of mine), I could see the combination of hope and doubt in her eyes.

And this is just the beginning.

I barely know the woman.

Hopefully that changes. Hopefully, she gives me the chance to help her make her life a little bit better.

And yes, I know this sounds all new-agey and sensitive.

But, if I want her to achieve lasting results and not just a short term (Biggest Loser) change, we’ve got to identify the emotions behind the obesity. When we do that, the workout & nutrition plan will work as advertised.

.

BTW, if anyone wants a kick-butt weight loss fitness program, check out the Health Habits Facebook Page. Become a fan and have free access to a workout plan designed to burn fat fast.
