childhood obesity psa where the wild things are

The U.S. Dept of Health and Human Services and the Ad Council today launched a new series of PSAs designed to address childhood obesity. Featuring characters from the upcoming film Where the Wild Things Are, the PSAs are an extension of HHS’ Childhood Overweight and Obesity Prevention campaign with the Ad Council, which encourages children and families to lead healthy lifestyles.

These PSAs cost millions of dollars.

But do they work?

Will this PSA get your kid to put down the Wii controller and go outside and play?

Great post

really it's a very good posting , good work

My kids are a bit old (32 & 29) for this to apply to them. In looking at it I realize that the problem in part is that people seem to have so little imagination that the commercial has to tell them to log onto a web site to get play ideas!????
When I was a kid (shortly before the earths crust cooled) our problem was when we saw something on tv or in the movies, we used our imagination and tried to imitate it (often to our peril). It took 3 broken arms one summer and the non-lethal hanging of my brother (he did get a bag of M&M's for letting the other kids hang him) before our parents confiscated the rope tied to the tree that leaned out over the 20 ft drop off.
I see plenty of play inspiring things in that video clip but it certainly won't do any good for kids that are used to just sitting before a tv or computer.
Doug, sounds like you have a great idea. Best of luck with it.

To me the change is going to have to come from the bottom up, rather than the top down!
I agree 100%
All levels of Canadian gov'ts and various NGOs have be fighting a battle against childhood obesity for the past 5 years.
The results? - An increase in kids eating junk food and a decrease in kids getting daily activity
Right now, I am in the midst of setting up free Fit Clubs in my city (Toronto). (I am starting with adults)
The idea is to get trainers to take a group (6-10 people) through an 8 week training program. A big part of the program is education. Each member of the Fit Club will learn how to design a group training program. Each member will also take turns leading the group under the watchful eye of their trainer.
After 8 weeks, the group will have the option of pooling their money to keep their trainer on board or go on their own.
I am trying to arrange indoor training locations (churches, community centers, etc) for the winter months.
At this point, it is a real mess....and I love it.
I will be putting out flyers for the first Fit CLub in my neighborhood this weekend

I have seven children, and this ad, wouldn't do a thing for them. Why? Because they are already outside playing! Not that we are perfect, because we are so totally are not, but I do encourage them to get outside and play. We limit computer and tv time.
The thought is a good one, but I'm just not convinced that the dollars are well spent. To me the change is going to have to come from the bottom up, rather than the top down!
