.
Earlier this week, I introduced you to Angela.
.
I told you of her failed attempts to lose the fat that has piled on since having her kids.
.
And I told you how she came to me desperate for an answer to her question.
.
“Why can’t I lose this fat”?
.
Angela has tried everything.
-
She has read every diet book.
-
She has exercised like an Olympic athlete.
-
She has cleansed.
-
She has choked down dietary supplements.
-
She has joined and quit three different diet programs.
She did what she was supposed to do.
.
She listened to the experts and did what they said.
.
And yet, through all of her ups and downs, she couldn’t convince her body to abandon that unwanted body-fat.
.
-
How come?
-
Did the diet industry lie to her?
-
What does Angela have to do to transform her body?
How Come?
.
There are a variety of reasons why people gain weight.
.
And each of these reasons spawns a variety of experts to tell you how to correct the problem.
-
Hormonal causes leads to a variety of dietary, exercise and pharmaceutical solutions
-
Lifestyle causes lead to a variety of lifestyle / exercise solutions
-
Dietary causes lead to a variety of dietary solutions
-
Emotional causes lead to a variety of psychological, social and pharmaceutical solutions
Like most people, Angela’s weight gain isn’t the result of one thing.
.
Her weight gain is multi-dimensional and is going to require a multi-dimensional solution.
.
Did The Diet Industry Lie To Her?
.
Yes and no
.
Most of the people involved in the weight loss industry have good intentions. They want you to lose weight. They are not lying to you.
.
However, in their desire to separate themselves from the rest of their business competition, they have to come up with a Unique Selling Proposition.
.
And since they are all offering quick and easy (ok, that is a lie) weight loss, they have to differentiate themselves by their method of weight loss.
.
They have to prove to you that their approach is right and that the other company is wrong.
.
-
The low-fat diet guru has to attack the low-carb diet guru
-
The cardio queen has to criticize the weight lifters, and
-
The drug companies just spend millions of dollars brainwashing us with marketing
And at the end of the day, when you fail to lose and / or maintain the weight loss, who is to blame?
.
You are.
.
You and your lack of will power.
.
It’s all your fault.
.
Right???
.
So, What does Angela have to do to transform her body?
.
-
She needs to realize that health and weight loss are twinned goals
-
She needs to realize that health and weight loss are multi-faceted issues
-
She needs to realize that she needs a multi-faceted solution
.
-
She needs to know that she can lose the weight
So What Is Angela’s Plan?
.
To achieve successful and permanent weight loss, Angela needs to address each of the 3 Paths to Fat Loss
.
Path # 1 Nutrition
Path # 2 Exercise
Path # 3 Mental / Emotional / Spiritual Strategies
.
Nutrition
.
There is no way around this one. You will never exercise your way around a diet based on pie ala mode. It’s just not going to happen.
.
Exercise
.
When I design a exercise program geared towards melting body-fat, I follow a very definite strategy. I always choose exercises that:
.
-
Burn a lot of calories
-
Maintain / Encourage muscle growth
-
Elevate resting metabolism
-
Elevate post-workout metabolism
.
Mental / Emotional / Spiritual Strategies
.
This path to fat loss is easily the most complicated, confusing and crucial of the 3 paths.
.
It is the most complicated because it is the most personal. It requires that we ask questions about our thoughts and emotions.
.
Somewhere between our urges / thoughts / desires and our actions lies our free will.
.
For some people, a desire for a great big bowl of ice cream right before bedtime is not a problem.
.
They have the ability to weigh the pros and cons and make a decision that is in their best interest. They also have the emotional control to act upon that decision.
.
For other people, that desire for ice cream overpowers their conscious mind.
.
And until they can gain control over their mind / emotions / spirit, they will break their diets, skip their workouts and gain more weight.
.
That’s it for now.
In my next post, I will cover my exercise plan for weight loss.
.
Stay tuned.

I love your approach…

Another HOME RUN! Nicely laid out fun and informative read. Have a nice weekend! Thanks!
The mental aspect is, indeed, the most complicated and most overlooked. You have to have the right mindset to stick with the nutrition and exercise.
I look forward to your exercise plan.
Thanks
The majority of people like “Angela” are eating more calories than they think. That’s why food diaries with calorie counts facilitate weight loss.

thanks for this…
i will definitely be reading because i had a baby 4 months ago and could definitely benefit from this!!!
I can never understand why those grocery store checkout magazines scream at us to try the latest fantastic diet.. then show a picture of a plate full of mouth watering food…
that is very true. i put on a tremendous amount of weight last year, and basically the whole year was spent trying to rub it off- to no avail, of course. it was only this year that i realized that i had been neglecting the emotional aspect of my life, and only when i solved that did all the weight come peeling off me.
Hi,
I am curious when your segments on Path #3 will be coming out…
As you said, it is definitely the most difficult. I have recently embarked on the lifelong journey of getting healthy.
I have “dieted” so much in the past that I have pretty good practice on what to do in that area, and from your blogs, I am not too far off the mark.
With exercise, to me, it is a necessary evil to a necessary acheivement. I have never been avid with it, but now I have to, and have made up my mind to do it. I appreciate all your work in posting the proper methods to attain results.
I am so very curious to discover what you have to say about Path #3. I need to learn how to “Cultivate my ‘want to’”, so to speak. Any and all advice I can locate will help!

Hi Julie
Part 3 is here
Part 4 is here
Part 5 is here
Part 6 will cover HIIT training – the cardio version.
It will look at sprint training with cardio machines, hill sprints, etc…
Regarding cultivating your “want to” attitude, i would suggest you look at the physical things that you actually enjoy / tolerate doing.
I actually enjoy lifting weights. I am a naturally strong person , so I get a nice ego boost when I can lift more today then I did the day before.
For most people, lifting weights is a necessary evil at best. Most find it boring and pointless.
Because of that, I need to design workouts for my clients that engage their minds as well as their body.
We need to engage your mind in your exercise program.

I like your quotes around “diet” – that word is so loaded with connotations…
